Sand dune preservation: Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale
Description
You can help to save some of Victoria’s most scenic beaches from invasive weed species!
The sand dunes around Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale consist of a variety of native plants that make up the threatened Coastal Moonah Woodland environment. Together these plants help stabilise the sand dunes and keep them in place, as well as provide shelter and food for a range of native animals. However, weed invasion and misuse by people are rapidly contributing to erosion of the sand dunes. Volunteers are needed to help eradicate the invasive weeds, block tracks that people have made through the dunes and encourage the regrowth of native plants.
This really is volunteering with a view – overlooking The Rip, watching ships go past and breathing in the fresh sea air, you can learn new weed I.D. skills and improve the environment.
Useful Information
We will provide transport from South Geelong, departing at 8.15am and returning around 4pm.
Volunteers need to bring their lunch and a bottle of water, as well as wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, and boots or sturdy shoes. It is also recommended that volunteers bring and use a broad-brimmed hat, sun-screen (30+) and insect repellent.
