Pedagogy in Nature – WILD MATHS Conference 2016, Melbourne

Description

Whether you work near the bush, beach, creek, desert or in an urban jungle this conference explores the potential of any outdoor environment to be a valuable context for children to develop their maths skills, knowledge and understanding. We focus upon child-led, child-initiated approaches that puts nature play at the heart of maths.

Juliet Robertson will lead a creative and practical day beginning with a lively interactive keynote. This is followed by a choice of afternoon workshops which will be outdoors whatever the weather. Bring your gumboots and warm, waterproof outdoor clothing.

Juliet’s Conference Keynote: Place Value: Nature Counts – Nature is full of mathematical treasures waiting for children to discover. Problem solving, critical thinking and basic maths concepts are learned through playful explorations everyday and natural resources. You will look at ways of leveraging the potential of any outdoor space as a context for child-led mathematical play.

Juliet’s Workshop: Wild Maths for the Adventurous Educator – Sticks and stones don’t break Napier’s bones. You will have fun stretching the boundaries of traditional early maths experiences through the use of the outdoors. Get ready for lots of rocks and rolling stones!

Juliet’s workshop will be complimented by additional workshops presented by Inspired EC trainers!
