Renowned for rugged mountain ranges, rich cultural heritage and spectacular wildflower displays, the Grampians are a must-see for all nature-lovers visiting Victoria. The 168,000 hectare Grampians National Park is a vast wilderness area protecting a diversity of plants and animals, many of which are endemic to the park.
On this exclusive, small group Naturewise Eco Escape we will take you behind the scenes to track the elusive Brush-tailed Phascogales, a threatened species in Victoria. You will take part in setting up camera monitoring equipment and collecting data, and in the process learn more about the animal’s natural habitat while making a direct contribution to Victoria’s Biodiversity Atlas.
Experience parts of the park that few others get to see. Immerse yourself in this breathtaking landscape and enjoy local walks, cultural sights and lookout’s. For people who enjoy exploring our national parks, this Grampians experience is not to be missed.

The 168,000 hectare Grampians National Park is a vast wilderness area protecting a diversity of plants and animals, many of which are endemic to the park. We will take you behind the scenes on this exclusive, small group adventure as you work alongside a Parks Victoria Ranger to ‘track and protect’ the elusive Brush-tailed Phascogales, which are on Victoria’s threatened species list. You will take part in setting up remote camera monitoring equipment and collecting data, and in the process learn more about the animal’s natural habitat while making a direct contribution to the Victorian Biodiversity Atlas.

Day 1 Depart Melbourne for the Grampians National Park. Enjoy lunch and a briefing from the Parks Victoria Ranger on the wildlife and monitoring program. You will learn about the Victorian Biodiversity Atlas and threatened species management, and get a feel for the Grampians during an interpretative walk exploring the National Park. (LD)

Day 2 Start the day at 7am, for morning camera monitoring activities led by our local guide. Activities will include walking through bush land, reviewing camera data and recording information. Following the morning activity, lunch is enjoyed in the National Park. In the afternoon there is time to explore the park on guided bushwalks and at scenic lookout points. After a great day in the field enjoy dinner and time to relax back at our accommodation. (BLD)

Day 3 We return to our monitoring site to set up cameras in the National Park with our local guide. After lunch we say goodbye to this beautiful region and return to Melbourne arriving at 6pm. (BL)

Useful Information

Accommodation: The eco-friendly Tim’s Place hostel and apartment accommodation located in Halls Gap. Accommodation is in dorm share rooms with shared bathroom facilities. Single and double rooms are also available, subject to availability, with a private ensuite. All linen and towels are included.

Program Transportation: Drive time from Melbourne to Halls Gap is 3.5 hours in a 2WD commuter bus with air conditioning. The research involves visiting several conservation sites, all within 1h drive of each other.

What to Bring: Standard comfortable outdoor and walking gear as detailed below.

Long sleeved shirt and trousers,  casual and comfortable clothing, waterproof hiking boots or closed toe walking shoes, a comfortable pair of shoes to relax in after the outdoor activities,  day pack, personal water bottle, warm clothing (beanie, gloves, thermals, fleece tops etc.), waterproof jacket and pants, personal toiletries, insect repellent, wide brimmed sun hat and broad spectrum sunscreen (factor 30+), sunglasses, any personal medication and any personal items you may require.
