Discover Kakadu National Park- behind the scenes

Description

Kakadu National Park is located 240 kilometres east of Darwin in Australia’s tropical north and is Australia’s largest terrestrial national park. Kakadu covers almost 20,000 square kilometres and is a place of enormous ecological and biological diversity. It extends from the coast and estuaries in the north through floodplains, billabongs and lowlands to rocky ridges and stone country in the south. These landscapes are home to a range of rare and endemic plants and animals, including more than one-third of Australia’s bird species and one-quarter of its freshwater and estuarine fish species. Traditional owners Bininj Mungguy have lived on and cared for this country for more than 50,000 years.

THE PROJECT: Join us for a week in the park and help with maintenance works to help get the park back into order after the wet season. As part of the Kakadu project volunteers will assist Park Rangers and Traditional Owners in the re-opening maintenance of the park. Each day we will head out to Mardagul camping ground to assist Park Rangers with conservation activities. Activities for the week will include, but are not limited to; vegetation clearing, rubbish removal, raking, re-painting of camp infrastructure, and various other general maintenance. Project days will vary in length and start times depending on weather conditions. You will however, have time to relax and take in the natural surrounds before cooking dinner in the evening. The project week will start at 8am in Darwin, where you will be required to meet at our office before departure. The three hour journey out to Kakadu National Park will take you through some amazing country, passing floodplains and escarpments and various other landscapes. We will return to Darwin by 5pm on Friday evening.
