Malabar Headland; A walk through history – Sydney
Description
Malabar Headland is a spectacular coastal setting with views of dramatic sandstone cliffs, and beautiful coastal bushland. The headland is an area of national significance for its natural, cultural and heritage values. Renowned for viewing seabirds, whale watching and marine life the Headland is one of the few coastal areas in Sydney to retain its natural vegetation. This year we will be working very closely alongside the old historical wartime trainline that runs through the site.
As one of the largest remnants of endangered Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub, the Headland supports many endemic native plants and threatened species including the eastern bent-wing bat and orange-bellied parrot. Culturally significant to the La Perouse Aboriginal people, evidence of early occupation is found throughout the Headland including grinding grooves, art engravings and shell middens. As a Heritage listed site, the Headland is a window to our recent past with World War II gun emplacements and railway cuttings. Work carried out at the Headlands by our volunteers will protect and enhance the natural and heritage values of the site.
Please join Conservation Volunteers Australia’s Sydney-based team for a fun day of ecological restoration at this spectacular but sensitive Headland. We will be encouraging the return of native birds, reptiles and mammals to an area that has been damaged by human use over decades.
