Wetland Rehabilitation & Riparian Restoration along Palm Creek Catchment, Ingham

Description

This is a new and exciting project for CVA, based in the Ingham area approximately 1 hour from Townsville and 3 hours from Cairns.  This is an ONE REEF PROGRAM – an initiative of CVA that harnesses the strength of partners, communities and volunteers to repair and reinstate priority wetlands and catchments of the Great Barrier Reef through the delivery of on-ground practical action, education, training, community engagement and volunteering.  ONE REEF is focused on mobilizing community to make a tangible and practicable on-ground difference to the health and resilience of the Great Barrier Reef by restoring catchments and improving water quality.

Opportunity to positively impact the health of the Great Barrier Reef.  In partnership with Greening Australia, and the Australian Government, Conservation Volunteers Australia will be undertaking revegetation activities at Palm Creek.  We will be collecting seed, planting trees and removing weeds in an effort to improve water quality entering the Great Barrier Reef.  Additional activities may include water quality monitoring, marine debris clean ups and surveys, fencing and experimental wetland restoration methods.

The Ingham area which remains relatively undiscovered by tourism despite the tropical riches it has to offer, from ancient cultures and rainforests to stunning beaches and coral reefs. With its warm weather and unique wildlife, the region is an ideal destination for anyone who wants to volunteer in beautiful habitats away from hordes of holidaymakers.

Volunteers need to bring and wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, boots or sturdy shoes, and a broad-brimmed hat. It is also recommended that volunteers bring and use sun-screen (30+) and tropical-strength insect repellent. Much of the site is sloping and not suitable for people with mobility problems.
