2016 West Australian Beach Clean Up, Woodman Point

Conservation Volunteers have joined forces with Tangaroa Blue for the 12th Annual West Australian Beach Clean Up.

18,000 individual pieces of plastic are estimated to float in every square kilometre of ocean. Over 7 million tons of plastic litter enter the ocean every year – 8 million pieces per day. This is three times as much rubbish as the annual weight of fish caught.

Once discarded into the ocean, plastics can take hundreds of years to breakdown into a fine plastic powder, but will always remain in the marine environment. Plastic bottles can take up to 450 years and monofilament fishing line up to 600 years, the cigarette butt, up to 10 years.

77 Australian marine species have been shown to be impacted by marine life, many of which are killed by this floating rubbish. This includes over twenty Australian endangered species including the humpback and blue whales, Tristan albatross and all species of turtles.

Tangaroa Blue Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation focused on the health of our marine environment, and coordinates the Australian Marine Debris Initiative, an on-ground network of volunteers, communities, organisations and agencies around the country monitoring the impacts of marine debris along their stretch of coastline.

Since the program started in 2004, more than 4.6 million pieces of marine debris have been removed from the Australian coastline and data on this debris collated and inputted into the Australian Marine Debris Database.

The database is used to firstly identify what is impacting different sections of the coast, and then to track wherever possible where those items are coming from. Practical solutions are then created to reduce and stop marine debris from entering our oceans.

Useful Information

We offer free transport from Fremantle at 8.00am or you can meet us on site at 9.00am. Please let me know which you would prefer.   The pickup spot in Fremantle is at Pioneer Reserve on the corner of Packenham Street and Short Street.

All you need to bring is a hat, lunch, and a water bottle.  Please make sure you are wearing a long sleeved top, long, thick pants and enclosed sturdy footwear.  This PPE is important to protect you from the sun, scratches and bites. We provide all the tools and safety equipment such as water, gloves and sunscreen.
